A Stellar Evening Awaits You
With the Mission Valley view from the fifth floor of the San Diego Union-Tribune as a backdrop, the San Diego Chapter of CCNMA-Latino Journalists of California hosts its 13th La Pluma Scholarship & Journalism Awards on Friday, September 26, 2008.
The Mission Valley office of Gold Sponsors Enlace and The San Diego Union-Tribune will again be the site of the annual event. On this special evening, CCNMA salutes the generosity of its sponsors, who enable it to fund its four core programs: Multi-Cultural Journalism Workshop for High School Students; Journalism Scholarship Program; Professional Skills Building Program; Student Outreach and Mentoring Program.
This year’s theme and topic of discussion, “Race and the White House,” will be addressed by Keynoter Paul Espinosa, professor of Chicano/a Studies at Arizona State University, also an award-winning filmmaker and producer. Espinosa is the founder of Espinosa Productions, a film and video company specializing in documentaries and dramatic films focused on U.S.-Mexico border topics.
Guiding the evening will be Master of Ceremonies Vic Salazar, president and CEO of Vic Salazar Communications. Salazar was a longtime anchor and reporter for NBC 7/39. A native San Diegan, Salazar’s reporting skills have been recognized with Emmy awards and a Gold Mike award in a wide variety of areas, including excellence in daily news and sports reporting.
The highlight of the evening is the awarding of the La Pluma Journalism Awards to local professional and student journalists, who excelled in Latino-focused radio, TV and print stories.
But not to be missed is the bestowing of the Lifetime Achievement Award to an extraordinary individual whose body of work personifies the mission of CCNMA. This year’s recipient, Max Branscomb, is a professor of journalism and Faculty Journalism Advisor at Southwestern Community College in Chula Vista. Branscomb, an award-winning journalism professor and local playwright, has influenced and honed the skills of countless college students pursuing journalism as a career. Branscomb is a long-time supporter of CCNMA and of the La Pluma Journalism Awards.
The evening would not be complete without three standout students from the 2008 summer Multi-Cultural Workshop for High School Students receiving their journalism scholarships, as part of the CCNMA-SD Journalism Scholarship Program.
A full, fun, authentic and exciting evening is planned at the 13th Annual La Pluma Scholarship & Journalism Awards – a truly "don’t miss" event.
Sponsorships of the event, in support of CCNMA’s four core programs, are available. Contact Eva Meléndez, La Pluma Event Coordinator, at 619.823.5729 or at e.melendez@att.net with any questions.
