Rescheduled La Pluma Simple, Successful
The 12th annual La Pluma Scholarship and Journalism Awards originally scheduled for Oct. 25, four days after the devastating San Diego wildfires began, was postponed and held nearly two months later.
Our annual La Pluma event, typically a gala event, was scaled-down after the devastating wildfires of late October and early November and held Dec. 13 at The San Diego Union-Tribune in Mission Valley.
CCNMA—Latino Journalists of California is a media organization. As such, our members were on the front lines covering the fires and the extensive and highly disruptive evacuations.
We felt that as the wildfires continued to take a significant emotional and physical toll on all of us who cover disasters as part of our jobs, it likely had the same effect on our sponsors and certainly on our award and scholarship recipients.
We thank La Pluma Gold Sponsors, The San Diego Union-Tribune and Enlace, for graciously offering their Mission Valley offices as the venue. We held a hosted two-hour reception, rather than a reception and a formal sit-down dinner.
At the reception, the student and professional La Pluma journalism award winners and journalism scholarship recipients were recognized and honored. The Lifetime Achievement Awards honoree, Lourdes Sandoval – news director for Univision KBNT-17 and Telemundo KHAS-33 – was celebrated, as were CCNMA sponsors for their tremendous support of our mission and efforts.
Funds raised for La Pluma are reinvested in our four core programs: Multi-Cultural Journalism Workshop for High School Students, Journalism Scholarship Program, Student Development Program and Professional Development Program.
And now the 2007 La Pluma Contest Winners:
